lostemperor: <ChessMan94> thanks to some conversations I have now also a satisfactorely idea to give something to a possible draw, since that is sometimes unavoidable afterall. The principle is still white must play for a win. But we wouldn't want white to commit total suicide if there is no chance for possible improvement at all . I must check out some, preferably, profesional chessplayers still since for us amateurs we always play for a win right:)?!
Jan-28-05  arielbekarov: <lostemperor>

In SOCCER !

Judit Polgar vs Garri Kasparov 10-2 !

5-0 is after 45 minutes !

She will remind the world about the great Hungarian team with Kocsis, Czibor, Puskas, Hidegkuti, Boszik, Grosics (Goalkeeper) and so on.
This team is together with the greatest of several Brazilian teams and Holland at its best, a legendary one !

Between 1949-1954 !
They didn't lose one single match until the final in Bern, Zwitserland. The win that really was reserved for them ! But, once again reality has something to say.

After leading with 2-0 in the final against a Germany that they defeated with 7-3 in the earlier round, they lost, 2-3.

It is the irony of life that this marvellous team didn't make it. But, Puskas, who didn't play against Brazil and Uruguay because of being injured, wasn't quite fit, even though he scored in the final. This is regarded as a mistake, but a very understandable one. How could they possibly not have one of their and the soccerworlds greatest geniouses ever in soccer, not playing in the final ? Of course, Puskas had to be on the field !

After, I think, 15 minutes, he was not able to play and during these days it was not possible to put in another player. This and the quick 2-0 lead for the Hungarians, who were too sure about the victory, made the impossible possible.

They thought it was only to put out their shoes on the field.

This great Hungarian team were the biggest favorite ever to win the title. They had made fun of England 1953 by as the first country defeating England in England and upon that at Wembley stadium. The result was 6-3 ! Even the Brittish journalists wrote afterwards that it was thanks to the kindness of the Hungarians that they didn't score more.

So Kasparov will do the best by avoiding meeting Judit Polgar in soccer.

Life has its delights !

Jan-28-05  arielbekarov: Can one write about chess also on this thread ?
I am a little bit confused now.

Do you know that in certain languages soccer is called "chess of the green field". My interpretation in English might be questionable.

The ball is round, whatsoever. It's an expression for that everything is possible. Ariel

Jan-28-05  ranchogrande: <ariel> your english doesnt "soc" (!)- nice to have you here on the site!
Jan-28-05  arielbekarov: <ranchogrande> Thank you ! It's always nice, when somebody makes one feel welcome, but now I will concentrate on chess. Ariel
Jan-28-05  iron maiden: Nice work by Leko. Seems Anand's reign as undisputed king of Corus is over.
Jan-28-05  bigbear: Black should try 15...Nh5
Jan-28-05  sandyobrien: LEKO!

well played, i'm beginning to like him more and more!

Jan-28-05  csmath: This is just plain positional understanding in case of Leko. With 21. Bf4 he keeps the file with his torn pawn open and takes a control of long black diagonal. I think 90% of the people, and many strong GMs would opted for removal of black knight on e4 first which would give Bruzon quite a decent countergame.

Bruzon should have played 16. ... d5 and Leko would have nothing but a draw.

Jan-28-05  JohnBoy: <csmath> - dude, doesn't 16...d5 fail to just 17.de5?

If 17...Ne5 then 18.Nxe5 Qxe5 19.ed5 wins a pawn with pressure, as black cannot play 19...Qxd5 due to 20.Rxe7.

If 17...Nxe4 then 18.Bxe4 de4 19.Rxe4 gets a pawn without much risk.

What do you have in mind?

Jan-28-05  csmath: Right. I was analising a completely different line from the one played. ;-)))
Jan-28-05  I See Dead Pieces: that game really reminded me of Bobby Fischers play. very strong indeed!!

  patzer2: Leko baits a pretty trap with 21. Bf4!?, and Bruzon falls for it with 21...g5 22. Nf5! gxf5??

Leko springs the trap with the decisive clearance capture 23. Rxe4!, and leaves Bruzon with no doubt about the outcome after 25. e6! (a second strong clearance move).

  patzer2: After 25. e6! play might have continued 25...Bf6 [25...fxe6 26.Qd4+ e5 27.Rxe5 Qc5 28.Rxe7+ Qxd4 29.Rxe8+ Bxe8 30.Nxd4 ; 25...Bxe6 26.Qd4+ f6 27.Rxe6 ; 25...Bc6 26.exf7 Rf8 27.Qd4+ ] 26.exd7 Rxe1+ 27.Qxe1 Qxd7 28.Qb4 f3 29.g3 .
Jan-29-05  bigbear: 15. Re2 is a very rare move in that position. Usually 15.Ne3 is played here. 15...Nh5 is better than Nc6. Black is allowed to play Nf4 quickly and then d5 will be easy, with equality. For instance :16.g4 Nf4 17.Bxf4 exf4 18.Qd2 d5 19.e5 f6 20.Qxf4 Nc4 21.Qg3 fxe5 22.Nxe5 Nxe5 23.dxe5 Qc5 24.Bd3 1/2Prasad-Dydyshko, Bangalore 1981. Bruzon is tired, and this game is not so impressive.
Jan-29-05  bigbear: And why not 20 ...Nd7? 21 Bf4 Rad8.
Jan-29-05  Notes: <arielbekarov> you know a lot of hungarian football. It's amazing, or R U hungarian? By the way in the final the hungarian team scored a third goal, but the referee sad it was offside (later most of the spectators, writers said it wasn't) Anyway, Lékó looks like clear favorite to win this tournament, and he plays football on a quite good level too. He said once, that he wanted to be a football player originaly, but when he was 10 years old, he was amaized, that he can beat adults in chess easily, the same in football was much harder off course, so he decided to be a chess player, instead of being a football player. And It was a very wise choice.

lostemperor: <football> Kasparov in his Deep Blue match refered to Maradonna's 'hand of God'. The goal, I think in 1986 where Maradonna scored with his hands vs England. His team Argentina went on to win the worldcup. Kasparov was suggesting a devine (human) interference occured for Deep Blue in the second game 97.
Jan-30-05  ughaibu: He didn't mention it after his game with Judit P.?

lostemperor: That is where the 'hand of God' forsaked the Knight:)
Feb-06-05  Seraphina: ARiel... If I remember, or so it says in some history books, the victory of the Hungarian team and its touring of the West also provided some impetus to the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, something to do with consumer goods, etc...
Jun-23-05  Medusa: Leko knows very well the lines of the ruy lopez and played a very nice game here, i like when leko plays this way, more agressive than the way he usually plays
Dec-22-05  AlexanderMorphy: is this the main line for the 13.Bd7 chigorin variation?if it is...where does theory end?
Jul-08-09  WhiteRook48: theory ends at 25 e6
