MKD: What's the continuation after 31.Ke3?
Please.

  OhioChessFan: 31...Qd3#

A Queen can checkmate in the middle of the board if a couple Knight moves away are blocked to the King.

fredthebear: <MKD> Consider all possible checks -- it might be mate!

After 31.KxRe3 Qd3#. This is a sideways Swallow's Tail Mate, a.k.a. Gueridon Mate. The defeated king's escape is prevented by his own army. (Note that the Dovetail Mate pattern occurs along diagonals instead of ranks or files.)

%_%_%_%_

A famous example of Gueridon's Mate could have occurred in

(C41) Philidor's Defense, Polo - Pasqualini, Ferrera 1923

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d6 3.Bc4 Be7? 4.d4 exd4 5.Nxd4 Nd7 6.Bxf7+ KxBf7 7.Ne6! Qe8 (If 7...KxNe6 8.Qd5+ Kf6 9.Qf5#) 8.Nxc7 Qf8 9.Qh5+ g6 10.Qd5+ Kf6 11.Bg5+ Kg7 12.Ne6+ 1-0 (Please note the spellings and early move order is unconfirmed speculation. Other sources may vary.)

fredthebear: Here's another smashing example of a sideways Swallow's Tail/Gueridon Mate:

Lasker vs J Sargent, 1891

Jan-03-22  Brenin: 25 Qa4 would have prevented this very pretty mating finish, since Re8 is not on for Black, who has nothing better than 25 ... Nxd2 26 Bxd2 Bd3+ 27 Kxd3 Qxf1+ 28 Re2 Bxb2.

  Honza Cervenka: 13.Rg1 loses momentum of white's attack, 13.h5 or 13.f4 were better options. 18.exd5 was a serious mistake, which could lose by force but black missed the most precise continuation of his attack 21...Qa5! 22.Kd1 Rb4 23.c4 Rxb3 24.fxe5 dxe5 25.Qxe5 Qa1+ 26.Ke2 Bd3+ 27.Rxd3 Rxb2+ 28.Kf3 Qxf1+ 29.Rf2 Rxf2+ 30.Bxf2 Qxd3+ 31.Kg2 Bf8 -+ and gave white a chance to get back into the game with 25.Qa4! as <Brenin> pointed out. Instead of beautiful but objectively imprecise 22...Bf6 it was possible to play 22...Rxe3 23.Qxe3 Ng6 24.Bd3 Bxd3 25.Rxd3 Qa5 or 22...Qa5 23.fxe5 Rb4 24.Qa7 Rxb2 25.Ke2 Bf8 with huge advantage in both cases.

  al wazir: And if instead 30. Bf2, then 30...Qh1+ 31. Rg2 Qh5+ 32. Kg3 Qh3# .
Jan-03-22  goodevans: <19.Rg2? [19.Rd2 b3 20.axb3 Qa5 21.Kd1 Bd8 22.fxe5 Bb6 23.Qf4 Bxe3 ∓ -2.05 (37 ply)]>

The wrong rook! The point being that Black's reply <19...Rfc8> threatens 20...Qxc2+ 21.Rxc2 Rxc2+ 22.Kb1 Rd2+ 23.Ka1 Rxd4 24.Bxd4 Ng6, leaving Black a piece up. <19.Rd2> would have given White's K an escape square on d1 taking away that threat.

It's not surprising that in such a complex game both players made a few mistakes. Great to play through though and a very pretty finish.
