plang: White doesn't mind the loss of time with 11 Ne5..f6 12 Nf3 because the f6 square is no longer available for Black pieces and the bishop on e6 is less secure. 12..c5!? was first played in J.Polgar's win over Marciano in the 1999 European Team Championships and had a brief period of popularity but scored poorly and has not been played in recent years. 15 Nd4 had been played in the draw Leko-Anand Wijk aan Zee 2000; 15 Bxc5 was new. Khalifman declined Karpov's exchange sacrifice as after 19 Nxc5..Nxc5 20 Qe3..Qxe3 21 fxe..dxc Black would have had good compensation. Khalifman's 19 Qe3 was stronger winning a pawn and had he played 32 Nc5+..Kd5 33 Na4 (or 33 Rc1) he would have had a technically winning endgame; instead after 32 f4? the game liquidated into a knight endgame where the winning chances proved elusive.
