plang: Black already seems close to equality after 6..Qb6. 9..Rd8 was new; 9..d5 had been played in the draw Hansen-Farago Wijk aan Zee 1988 (Informant classifies the opening as a Symmetrical English but there is overlap in some of these type of openings). The complications initiated with 11 Bxc6?! were not favorable for White; 11 Qb3 with equality would have been more prudent. Adianto said after the game that he had overlooked 14..h6! with the idea of answering 15 Qe7 with 15..Ba6. After the alternative 19 Nb5..Bxb5 20 cxb..Qd5 21 Ng6..Rb8 Black would have had the upper hand. The alternative 20 Nxd7..Nxd7 21 Qxd7..Bxc4 22 Rc1..Bd5 would not have helped White and would have backfired after 22 Nc3?..Qa3. Handoko recommended 24..Bb7 but after 25 Nxd7..Qh5 26 g4..Qh4 27 Ke2 White should be OK.

At this point Timman was no longer ranked in the top 10 but he was still playing interesting creative chess.
