plang: In this rarely played sideline 7..Qa5+ was new; 7..Qb6, 7..Bg7 and 7..Ba6 had been played previously. Topalov missed a chance to gain an advantage with 18..Ng4 19 Bg3..Bxc3 20 bxc..Bc4 21 Bd1..Bxd5 22 c4..Bd6 23 Re2..e5. Bareev was surprised by 21..Bc4 (he expected 21..Nc6 22 Nxe7+..Kh8 with compensation for the pawn) but was not confident enough to play 22 Nb6..Ba2 23 Rxe7..Ra6 24 Rb7..Nc6 25 Nd7 with a small edge for White.

Bareev after 42 a4:
"The remainder is clear: the black king goes toward the a-pawn, the b-pawn is exchanged, and the bishop is given up for the remaining passed g-pawn after it is created."
