plang: In this popular theoretical line 11..Be7 had been played by Vallejo Pons in his loss to Leko at Linares 2003; 11..0-0 was new (at least in this database). 14 f4? doesn't work after 14..Nxe4 15 Nxe4..Bxe4. Bad would have been 14..axb? 15 Nxb5..Qc6 16 Nxd6..Qxd6 17 Bxe5 but it would have been even worse after 17..Qe7 18 Rxd7!.

After 21 Kd2:
"Short commented that this was the position he had envisioned on move 14, but that he had 'mistakenly assessed it as crushing for White in view of the threats of Ra1 and Bxf6' ".

Movsesian after 23..f6:
"Here I offered a draw, as I couldn't really assess the complications which occurred in the game later."

27..exf?! 28 Ra1..Qxa1 29 Rxa1..Rxa1 30 gxf would have been unclear but better for White than occurred in the game. Movsesian considered 28 Qe7? to be the losing move; he recommended 28 Qg4..Rd6 29 Ke1..Rcd8 30 Qg6 with unclear play. If 29 Ra1..e3+ 30 Ke2..Qc4+ 31 Ke1..Re8 32 Qd7..Bc8 and the white queen is trapped.

Voted the 6th best game in Informant 90.
