May-11-18  hdcc: Love that pun, FSR; I really had to think about that. Now that I figured out the reference, should I venture to ask what Hayden's ELO rating was?

Dionysius1: I don't know many games by heart, but that one I'll learn. If it wasn't cooked up between them, it must have been such a shock to the anonymous owner of the black pieces. The aggression is like successive punches in the face.
May-11-18  morfishine: The "Electric Light Orchestra" is practically an orchestra. There are 12 current members, 25 former members & 7 associated members.

Thats a lot of band members

FSR: <hdcc> They didn't have Elo ratings in those days, but Hayden was obviously a strong player.

It is still 'unpunned'

This game is given by Bruce in his book 'Cabbage Heads and Kings' a good chatty read. He says his never had time to get his cigar smoking opponents name as the game was over so quick.

It must been in some tournament as Bruce says he was first to finish.

He mentions that here

BTW, if instead 13...NxQd1, then 14.Nxg7#.

Didn't he also say in his notes something to the effect that "White hasn't played as suggested in the best books. But what's the use? Everybody reads those books!" A fine healthy antidote to over-obsession with opening theory.
