May-03-04 | | David Law: A courageous 10 years old girl against GM Larry Christiansen and hanged on with an even position until the end game. |
May-03-04 | | Benjamin Lau: That's very impressive play for a 10 year old rated 553 (and she played Larry with the black pieces too). She did pretty well except for some mistakes towards the end and missing the implantation of the knight- the subsequent trade of the dark bishop left her perilously weak on the dark squares. 30...Nxf2 would have been better. If Kxf2, Valerie queens the pawn. 30...Nxf2 31. Kxd2 Ne4+ with a white advantage, but it's more difficult to convert into a win. Other than that, not really that bad a game. |
May-03-04 | | iron maiden: She's rated 553? I didn't think they did ratings that low. Do you mean 1553? |
May-03-04 | | Benjamin Lau: I didn't know they had ratings that low either, but it says 553 on the scoresheet so I sort of went along with it. It seems too good to be true, maybe 1553 is correct. |

May-03-04 | | iron maiden: Wow! It's true, 553!
So if a 553-rated player did this well against Christiansen, I should be able to actually beat him! :-) |
May-03-04 | | David Law: I believe GM Larry Christiansen is available at times for Master Challenge in the internet website www.worldchessnetwork.com. Good luck when you have a chance to play him. I did but I lost. Please post your result as well. |
May-03-04 | | Jim Bartle: That really is impressive for a 10-year-old with (apparently) little experience, according to her rating. |
May-03-04 | | hongisto24: Larry plays ICC simuls too. Had a dream position against him...up a piece with an attack and then proceeded to blow it...me 1800 USCF. |
May-04-04 | | iron maiden: Wow. If that were me, I think I'd cry. |
May-04-04 | | PinkPanther: There is no way this girl is just 553, her understanding of basic chess principles is too high. By the way, was this game done in a simul or what? |
May-04-04 | | iron maiden: Who knows, this girl could just be seriously inexperienced. Who knows, Pinkpanther, she could be a PRODIGY! (ducks) |
May-04-04 | | PinkPanther: What would inexperience have to do with her playing BEYOND her alleged playing strength? Trust me, if this kid really is rated just 553, then she's one huge sandbagger. |
May-04-04 | | iron maiden: What I'm saying is, maybe she only played a few rated games, did poorly, and then improved quickly somehow. |
May-04-04 | | David Law: This Simul game was played at the Boylston Chess Club in Boston during the "GM Smackdown" event on March 18, 2004. Larry scored 15 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss. |
May-04-04 | | iron maiden: Not so surprising if it's a simul...still, most people rated 1000 points higher would not have lasted as long. |
May-04-04 | | David Law: I am thinking if there would be a winning line for black somewhere:
29. b3 Kf2 30. c4 bxc4 31. bxc4 Nd2+! The fact that white's King is kept away from reaching the center allows black a positional advantage. |
May-04-04 | | PinkPanther: <iron maiden>
Tell me about it, he smashed me last night in a simul on the ICC :( He piled up a bunch of pressure on my d pawn and eventually won that and my e pawn...AND it didn't help that I made two very bad blunders. |
