Apr-07-04  weary willy: I sometimes wonder about the criteria for selecting these games ... don't necessarily think they are inappropriate - just wonder :-)
Apr-07-04  firn: Whats so special about this game? I want to ask the same question as weary willy. This game looks more like a joke than actual chess.

Sneaky: What's special about it is that Woody Harrelson is a popular television and film actor. I think it's kind of cool that Woody was hanging out with Sierawan and Kasparov, don't you?

The game itself... well, never mind about the game itself. Nothing to say about it.

Apr-07-04  f1list: i don't get. how could this guy draw with Kasparov?
Apr-07-04  Benjamin Lau: It doesn't look like Kasparov took the game very seriously.
Apr-07-04  markt: that is a great joke! i laughed a lot!
Apr-07-04  Benjamin Lau: Oh, I finally got the joke too. I forgot that he was on the show "Cheers." I don't think I've ever seen any of his performances except his guest appearance on Frasier, which I didn't watch a lot either.
Apr-07-04  AdrianP: I posted this game via the upload utility... I would have loved to have seen Gazza's face when faced with 2. Qh5... I reckon Yasser was probably rolling around.
Apr-07-04  AdrianP: ...and the devastating follow-up 3. Bc4!
Apr-07-04  weary willy: Ah! A popular tv and film actor. My ignorance then - but the game looks as authentic as those said to be by Napoleon and various Popes.
Apr-07-04  Paul123: AdrianP I got it! LOL I thought it was funny (the Qh5 then...3 Bc4)

Yasser probably put Woody up to it.

Apr-07-04  kevin86: Why do celebrities get the kid glove treatment? I would like to see a real game between the two-WH wouldn't last ten moves!!

Why do we say "cheers!",when we drink booze?

Apr-07-04  beenthere240: Harrelson was also in "Natural Born Killers" so perhaps K. thought that discretion was the greater part of valor ;-)

jaime gallegos: WH also was a guess actor on Will & Grace Tv show
Apr-07-04  Hinchliffe: <AdrianP> Hi Adrian sorry but I still don't appear to have the address of the chess pub in London.Perhap you have sent it and some how it got deleted in error. If so please accept my apologises. Would really like to attend the next meeting if possible so once more unto the breech please. If you have lost my address it is hinchliffe@eggbacon.com. Cheers.
Apr-07-04  zugzwangninja: "Woody had a bit of help from
Yasser Seirawan" must mean that Yasser was telling Woody what moves to make (after the opening, I would imagine). Pretty much no one under GM strength, or at least strong IM, could last 30 moves against Kasparov and not lose material.
Apr-07-04  Benjamin Lau: ...unless Kasparov did not take the game seriously as I said before. Do you really think Kasparov would play the King's Pawn Game of all things if he wanted to win? ;)
Apr-07-04  Calchexas: <BL>: That's very funny. But, in all seriousness, do you think G.K. was expecting 2. Qh5? I could see why Kasparov didn't perform as well as possible.

BTW, how's this for a celebrity game: Stephen King vs. Queen (the band.)

Apr-07-04  Halfpricemidge: Exactly, Kevin, even against someone lesser than Kaparov with say a 2300 or 2400 rating playing against one of us amateurs trying our most sneaky sacrifice and then swiftly getting 'punished' in 14 moves. Or seven moves if it was against RJF or Kasparov.
Apr-07-04  Jim Bartle: I remember reading about this game, which apparently was played with plenty of people around, all making rude comments. When K avoided mate on move 3, Harrelson said "Damn," and Seirawan gaped at him and said "You think you're going to trick the world's best player on the third move?"
Jun-02-04  loudubb: This was a "lighted hearted consultation", aka not serious game, just for fun. I think celeberities and chess are a good mix... maybe some day they'll have RealTV chess. THat be funny.
Jun-14-04  Whitehat1963: Any guesses on who would win in the battle of the Woodys, Harrelson and Allen?
Jul-21-04  mack: <Why do we say "cheers!",when we drink booze?> In ye olden days, one would have given "three cheers to..." whoever had bought the latest round of drinks. It has become merely "cheers" over the years.
Nov-26-04  kostich in time: Somebody made a comment about "games played by Napoleon and various Popes."I can t vouch fro Napoleon, but the present pope is a chess enthusiast and probably a strong amateur. Hes even composed a few studies. Another chess playing Pope was Leo the 13th, who wrote Rerum Novarum and who revived the study of Aquinas. One of his games is in the first edition of Wellmuths Golden Treasury.
Jan-08-05  cade: Gotta laugh at Woody trying to mate Kasparov in 4 moves.
