plang: 6..Bd7 is a sideline avoiding the main lines with 6..e6 although, in this game, White quickly obtained a promising position. 16..Bc5 had first been played in Sutovsky-Thorhallsson Gausdal 1995 (Black won); 16..Qc5? was new but is clearly an error. 24..Kc7 25 Bxd8+..Rxd8 26 Rxd6..Rxd6 27 Rxd6..Qf1+ 28 Rd1..Qxf7 29 Qg3+ would have been hopeless but better than what he played. Black resigned due to 26..Bc7 27 Rxd5+..Ke6 28 Qc6+..Bd6 29 Rxd6+..Rxd6 30 Qe8+.

16..Qc5? was clearly not preparation; Sherbakov apparently tried to surprise Svidler with 6..Bd7 but was not sufficiently knowledgeable with the intricacies of the variation.
