MissScarlett: This is actually a consultation game, with Staunton partnering Barnes, but Lowenthal's only identified as <one of the best players in the [St. George's] Club.>

MissScarlett: Loewenthal also gave this game in his <Era> column of November 16th 1856, p.14, fixing the game date as November 1st.

On <6...dxc3>: <This move was made by Heydebrand in a game with Mr. Staunton, and is a favourite one with the German School. The result of this game, however, goes to show that it is not sound. These consultation games should be regarded as the means of testing the value of discoveries by actual play over the board, rather than as mere contests for victory, and Herr Lowenthal gave this mode of defence a trial on the recommendation of a distinguished player.>

<8.Bg5> is asserted as superior to <8.Nd5> from Staunton vs von der Lasa, 1853.
