  plang: A few months earlier at Wijk aan Zee II (Corus) 24..Bxd5 was played in the draw Van der Weil-Cmilyte; 24..Kh8 was new. 26 Rfe1? was the losing move; Gelfand recommended either 26 c4 or 26 Nb4 as alternatives - ie. 26 Nb4..Rf5 27 Qg4..Bc8 with Black having compensation for the pawn. White underestimated the decisive 27..e3! counting instead on 27..Re5? 28 Qxf4..Bxb3 29 axb..Bxd5 30 c4..Bb7 31 c5! when White is able to generate counterplay. 28 fxe..Rg5 29 Qf3..Bg4 and 28 Re2..Rxb3 29 Nxf4..Rd5 30 Qxg7+..Kxg7 31 Nxe6+..Kg8 32 Rde1..Qf6 33 axb..Rd2 would both also have been winning for Black. 29..h5! was stronger than 29..Bxb3 30 Nxf5.
