plang: In their draw at Sarajevo a month earlier Bareev had played 13 Rb1 ag would have led toainst Radjabov; here he varied with 13 Bb2. 17 cxd had been played by Tukmakov in his win over Hulak at the 1996 Croatian Team Championship; 17 Bd3!? was new but does not seem to be an improvement as Black quickly obtained a promising initiative. White's exchanging combination with 28 Nxe4?! would have led to a lost position had Black played 30..Qf6 31 Rxe4..Ne6; instead after 30..Kf8? the advantage passed over to White. 32..Qxf3?! and 34..d3?! were questionable decisions leaving White with a favorable endgame. 44..Kf6 would have been an improvement with good drawing chances. After 46..Ra3? Black was lost; better would have been 46..Ra6+ 47 Kd7..Ra5 48 Rd2..Kf7 49 h4..gxh 50 f4..Ra5 51 e5..Re4 52 Rd6..Kg7 53 e6..h3 54 Rd3..h2 55 Rh3..Re2 again with good drawing chances.
