plang: THIS GAME IS CLASSICAL - NOT RAPID.

Shirov, prior to this game, had usually played 3 e5 but here decided to use the classical system. A month earlier at Wijk aan Zee Kramnik had chosen the sideline 13 Ne4 (rather than 13 Kb1) against Bareev and had gone on to win a nice positional game. Shirov, not convinced that Kb1 was necessary in this line, also played 13 Ne4 but followed it up with the aggressivel 14 Nxf6+ and 15 g4!? - an idea that has not been repeated. After thinking for more than an hour Dreev accepted the sacrifice with 17..Nxg4!. Shirov recommended 16..Nxf2! 17 Qd2..Ne4 (taking the exchange is very risky) 18 Qe3..Ng5 19 Nxg5..hxg 20 Bxg5 with compensation for White. 20 Qxc6 would have given White better chances than the game. With 25 a4! Shirov was envisioning endgame scenarios; perhaps Black should have responded 25..a5. 36 Rd1+?! led to a draw; 36 Kb4..Rh4+ 37 Ka5 would have given White good winning chances.
