plang: Flohr had played 13..Bd7 in game 3 of his 1933 match with Botvinnik and the game had quickly ended in a draw. Shirov's 13..Nd7?! had been played once before in the draw Kotov-Koblents 1945 USSR Ch. but Krasenkov considered it to be a mistake. The 1945 game had continued 14 Ng5; Krasenkov's 14 Bd2 was a clear improvement creating pressure against Black's queenside that was difficult to meet. 21..Nd5 22 Nxd5..exd 23 Ra1 would also have been bleak for White.
