offramp: <Benjamin Lau: ..In modern chess among GMs, playing as white is the equivalent of having the serve in tennis.> They win as white and lose as black?
Apr-20-06  Petrosian63: Akopian is a very strong player and has sustained his 2700+ rating for a while. Kasparov deserves this lost.
Apr-20-06  AlexandraThess: In my opinion Akopian is a bit overrated. He is a barely 2700 player.
Apr-20-06  Petrosian63: I don't believe Akopian is overrated because he never gets the talk up before tournaments but ends up doing well.
Apr-20-06  Organizer: I must be missing something because after 27. Qxf8+ Kxf8 there is no check with Ne5 on white's 28th move, and without that why does Kasparov resign?
Sep-13-06  zerathul: <Organizer> look at white rook on f1
Feb-11-07  sfm: What happens in this game? After 17.Nd2 everything still looks undramatic, although f2-f4 is right under the surface. So black decides to strike first, and after a few more moves it is all over! Where's blacks first mistake?
Feb-14-07  argishti: sfm: What happens in this game?

the kasparov shock happened my friend!

there is a pic of kasparov looking helplessly at his advisor, when he lost this game:

As follows:
pic: http://www.chesscenter.com/twic/eve...

and the headline:

The shock results kept coming on day three of the Alfa Bank Russia v Rest of the World rapid chess match at the Kremlin Palace. The Rest of the World led 25.5-24.5 overnight and increased their lead to 41.5-38.5 with two rounds to go. ROW had been buoyed by the terrible form of the three Russian world champions Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik and this trio fared even worse on day three having been thoroughly humbled the day before. The Ukrainian pair of Vassily Ivanchuk and Ruslan Ponomariov; losing finalist and victor respectively in the Fide championship this year led the way for the ROW with individual performances of 5/8.

Nov-20-07  Sularus: Baku VS Baku
Nov-30-07  arsen387: < AdrianP: Kasparov had apparently referred to Akopian (+GMs Nisipeanu and Movsesian) as nothing more than chess tourists shortly before this embarrassing performance...!> Then he deserves this loss after that flash of sef-over-evaluation and even more. If you do not respect you opponent then you will lose even if you are Kasparov! <Sularus: Baku VS Baku> I would like to rephrase "armenian born in Baku vs. armenian born in Baku" (though Kasparov is armenian only from his mother's side)
Nov-30-07  Everett: <arsen387> In what country does Baku reside?
Oct-29-08  arsen387: <Everett> sorry for a 'little' delay, even after a year passed, Baku is still in Azerbaijan :)
Apr-22-09  DUS: Now Kasparov is a real tourist in politics. In this game Akopian gave him a good lesson.

<arsen387> nice comments!

Apr-22-09  DUS: <Benjamin Lau: Akopian also played as white more times in the database.>

<Open Defence: True Mr Lau, I wonder if any analysis was done over Kasparov's plus scores (as to whether having white pieces made a big difference).. one thing though considering Kasparov's ability to win with Black>

Here Kasparov played only white. Perhaps it depends against whom he plays, having even the whites. The two games Petrosian lost were played shortly before he died in 1984.

search "Petrosian vs kasparov"

It is sad that later Kasparov allowed him some unnecessary words in the address of Petrosian (who actually was also one of his teachers).

In any case it seems Kasparov has tried hard against Petrosian with no success.

Apr-23-09  returnoftheking: so this is what happens when bigmouth Kasparov gets out of book early. I like it^^
Apr-23-09  returnoftheking: This may be relevant to Mr. Lau and others who may think that Akopian only had a better score because of more whites. I doubt it; Kaspy seems to hide his fear with brawl! Just found this quote of Akopian on one of the games in this database:

Akopian about Kaspy:

"In the other game, he was White. He immediately began trading all the pieces and he made a draw against me. So he was White and I could not prevent him from doing this. But for me, for sure Kasparov is the tourist"

Look at the games!

Apr-23-09  ivan999: sure, kasporov is petrfied of akopian.
Apr-23-09  returnoftheking: or maybe it was jealousy instead of fear. One of those for sure.
Apr-23-09  DUS: Please read the posting of <PARAKONT1> on the following page.

Akopian vs Kasparov, 1995

I like what <PARACONT1> writes ^^, who seems to be well informed.

<But Kasparov FEARS only one player and avoided playing him regularly for years. This is Akopian. >

Aug-16-09  squlpt: If Kasparov is so "petrified" of Akopian, how come he was a 6-1 game advantage in wins?
Oct-16-10  Xeroxx: He doesn't many the losses in the database were just internet blitz games.
Jul-28-14  shintaro go: Another stinker from the arrogant kasparov
Oct-05-14  culiche: <Sep-10-02 Sneaky > You mean this line ?
