plang: 9 Bd2 is a rarely played alternative to the main line 9 Qd2; Korchnoi has always had a fondness for playing offbeat lines. Korchnoi had recently played 12 d5 in a win against Balinov (game not included in this database); 12 Ng5?! was new but Smirin thought it was over optimistic. 21 Nf3..Rc4 22 e5..Nb4 23 e6..Rxd5 24 Rxb7 would have given White decent counterplay; instead after Korchnoi's 21 f4? he was in trouble. 23 e5..Nb4 24 Rxb4..Rxb4 25 Rxc2..Rxd5 26 Rc8+..Bf8 27 e6..f6 would also have been winning for Black.

Smirin won the 6 player double round robin with an undefeated +2 one half point ahead of Tkachiev and Dreev.
