Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-14-08  zb2cr: Old-fashioned slam-bang chess. Black was asking for trouble with 6. ... exd4, and compounded it by playing 8. ... Qe7 instead of the slightly more common 8. ... Qf6. Still, it's fun to see such a brisk attacking game.

For the novices: Black resigned due to the threat of a back rank mate. In the final position, he can adopt one of two plans to get out of check.

1. He can try 24. ... Kg8. This fails due to mate in one with 25. Qe8#.

2. He can interpose Bishop, Knight or Queen on e7.

a. 25. ... Be7 leads to mate in 2 from
26. Qd8+, Nxd8; 27. Rxd8# (note that the pinned Bishop can't take the Rook on d8).

b. 25. ... Ne7 is even worse, White plays 26. Qxd8#.

c. 25. ... Qe7 gets the same treatment as variation 2a, i.e., 26. Qd8+, Nxd8; 27. Rxd8#.
