Apr-28-06  haconly: Wow, nice game.Killer criss-cross pattern formed by Queen+Bishop+Bishop.
Apr-28-06  kozo: i think 5. ... Bb4+ looks a lot better for black, he is probably just holding on though.
Apr-28-06  Bennica: Excellent game
Apr-28-06  Runemaster: "Spinale Tap" would have been another musical pun. Or maybe even "Spinale Trap", seeing how the game went.
Apr-28-06  dakgootje: Why 6. ...Bh5? To protect the f7-pawn i guess, but i assume there are far better moves, arent there?
Apr-28-06  aragorn69: Horrible play by Black... But, silly me, I would have gone for 10.Qc5+ winning a piece, when 10.b3! mates or wins the queen... :-)(
Apr-28-06  dutchboy13: very nice game black has to give up his queen not be checkmated in the next move for white bishop a3
Apr-28-06  outplayer: This miniature is an example on how not to play the AQG.
Apr-28-06  outplayer: The variation 1.d4 d5 2.c4 dc4 3.e4 e5 4.d5 Nf6 5.Nc3 c6 6.Bc4 Bb4 is never played at high level. I have played this line as Black and White has moved 7.Bg5. It seems that 7.Qb3 is a better move. Any comments?
Apr-28-06  outplayer: 4...Bg4 is not good. 4...Nc6 is considered the best.
Apr-28-06  drmariogodrob: <aragorn69> 10. Qc5+ doesn't even actually win a piece, after 10. ... Qd6 11. Qxh5 Qb4+ and 12. ... Qxc4.
Apr-28-06  JustAFish: <10. Qc5+ doesn't even actually win a piece, after 10. ... Qd6 11. Qxh5 Qb4+ and 12. ... Qxc4>

What about 12. Nd2 in this line? It looks like it saves the bishop? Whatever the case, 10 b3 is better. :-)

Apr-28-06  patzer2: An interesting history of the song "unchained melody" can be found at http://home.earthlink.net/~charlieh...

My favorite versions are by the Righteous Brothers and LeAnn Rimes.

Apr-28-06  patzer2: <outplayer> <4...Bg4 is not good> Agreed. After 4...Bg4? Black has an inferior game. Better is 4... exd4 5. Bxc4 Bb4+ 6. Nbd2 with counter chances as in Dreev vs Rublevsky, 2006.
Apr-28-06  patzer2: In addition to 10. b3! Qc8 11. Ba3+ Kd8 12. Bxf8 , White also had 10. Bg5+ Nf6 (10...f6?? 11. Qe6#) 11. e5 with a decisive pin.
Apr-28-06  weary willy: Spinale curtain
Apr-28-06  Alex S.: IT'S THE SPINALE COUNTDOWN

Doodoo doooo doooo. Doodoo doo doo dooooo...

On a more serious note, this is easily escapable with a Queen move, surely.

Apr-28-06  MorphyMatt: Excellent!!!!!
Apr-28-06  weary willy: <On a more serious note, this is easily escapable with a Queen move, surely.> when and where? ... not in the final position because the horse is still in its stable
Apr-28-06  kevin86: No,a queen move won't allow relief:

10...♕e8 11 ♗a3+ ♔d8 12 ♕xa8+ picks up a rook,while

10... ♕c8(or b8) 11 ♗a3+ ♔d8 12 ♗xf8 and steals a bishop

Apr-28-06  technical draw: <patzer2> Thanks for that link. A whole web site dedicated to one song. Great!
Apr-28-06  EmperorAtahualpa: I see in the opening explorer that 4...Bg4 is an uncommon move. Normal is 4...exd4 or 4...Nf6.

But what is particularly bad about this move 4...Bg4? Can anyone explain? Thanks.

Apr-28-06  weisyschwarz: 4...Bg4 isn't half as bad as 6...Bh5.
Apr-28-06  Mendrys: IMHO 4...Bg4? is bad because pinning the knight in this position is useless. As such, it would have been better to develop it in a more defensive fashion. After 5...Nc6 6. Qb3 the bishop just look silly where it's at.
Apr-28-06  ajile: After seeing this game I'm glad I have my phlegm bucket handy under my desk. Ugly opening by Black.
