  Honza Cervenka: Very nice. If 17.Qxh6, then 17...Rg8+ 18.Ng3 Rxg3+ 19.hxg3 Qxg3+ 20.Kh1 Qxf3+ 21.Kg1 Qg3+ 22.Kh1 Qh3+ 23.Kg1 Ng4

  al wazir: <Honza>: But what if 17. d4 ? Then after 17...Rg8+ 18. Ng3 Rxg3+ 19. fxg3 exd4 20. Kh1 hxg3 21. Qg2, white is at least temporarily safe, and black is out of ♖s. If instead 18...hxg3 19. fxg3 exd4, then 20. Rf2.

Or if 17...exd4, then 18. Qf4 Rg8+ 19. Ng3 hxg3 20. fxg3 exc3+ 21. Kh1 cxb2 22. Rab1. White has ♖ vs. ♘+♘+♙+♙.

I would have played on a few more moves.

Oct-15-07  ForeverYoung: 16 ... Nh5!! with the threat of ... Nf4 would have been much stronger than 16 ... Ke7. This line is courtesy of Amos Burn.

16 ... Ke7 provides interesting food for thought. It appears that both moves are sufficient for victory. 17 d4 Rg8+ 18 Ng3 hxg3 19 fxg3 exd4 20 Rf2 dxc3 leaves Black a piece up. 19 hxg3 exd4 20 Qf4 Nh5! hurts White.

Sep-28-11  SeanBurdine: The long and short of it is that there is no adequate defense to 17... R-N1 ch. And my source has White resigning after Black's *15th* move, not 16th.
Nov-20-12  Wyatt Gwyon: Slick.
Jan-16-13  Tullius: After 17.d4, as <al wazir> suggests, Black will not capture with his e-pawn, but with his Knight, threatening mate in one (Nxf3#). After 17.d4 Nxd4 18.cxd4 Bxd4 White is still facing the threat of Rg8+.
