Feb-25-04  capanegra: 24.Re2!, splendid move! This game is a good instructive example about the risks of not castling.

Yes, 24 ♖e2! is an excellent move by Morphy.

He simply threatens 25 ♖d2, <PINNING> the Black d3-queen to the Black d8-king along the open d-file.

If Black meets this threat by playing 24 ... ♕x♖e2?, then the Black queen is <DEFLECTED> from defending the d5-checking focal point and Black is mated by 25 ♕d5+ ♔e8 26 ♕e6+ ♔d8 27 ♕e7#.

Jan-29-09  WhiteRook48: 28. Qb5+! even is good, even though it's just basic tactics and people are getting bored of it
Mar-16-09  WhiteRook48: 24. Re2! is a great sac that black of course declined
May-05-09  heuristic: mo' better moves:

15...c6 16.Ba3 Be6 17.Bxe7 Kxe7 18.Rad1

23...Kd7 24.Qf3 Kd8 25.Qg4 Rd8 26.Qxg7

May-25-12  Llawdogg: 24 Re2! How does he think of this stuff?
Feb-14-21  Z legend of CG: <CG> score has extraneous moves.

MissScarlett: Removed <27...Kd7 28.Qb5+>, per the original publication in the <Times-Democrat> in 1887.
Jun-14-22  joeld: Maurian's move 19...Be3 proves that there was a version of Stockfish that ran on Babbage's mechanical computer and that Maurian was a cheater.
