Nov-07-03  PinkPanther: Oh My God! Morphy gives this guy Rook, pawn, and move odds. I must admit it was rather humorous to see white's pawn out there on e4 before the game had actually started.
Apr-15-05  DCP23: So it seems giving up a Rook, a pawn, and a move is a bit too much even if you are Morphy.
Apr-15-05  RookFile: Think Morphy was a better player
than Steinitz?

Well, this same guy, Maurian, would
beat Steinitz in a full odds game:

Steinitz vs Maurian, 1883

Nov-03-05  chesscrazy: Wow what a game! Interesting odds.
Dec-01-05  Chopin: Morphy was so good, that in order to beat him, you had to be up a rook, a pawn and a move. What perhaps is worse, is losing being up all this material.
Mar-30-07  Silverstrike: Let's not take anything away from Maurian, he took advantage of the odds and won quite comprehensively.
May-11-07  realbrob: Well, I suppose that with best play the initial position of this game is forcibly won for White, and maybe a bit of engine analysis could confirm that. If you start to play being down a rook, a pawn (the f7 pawn, which makes your king weak) and a move, it means you hope your opponent will make some big blunders.

keypusher: To be pedantic, this is rook, pawn and two moves odds (which I've never seen before). Pawn and move odds means you play without your f-pawn and your opponent moves first.
Dec-31-08  WhiteRook48: Nice of Morphy to play 27...Be6.
Jan-01-09  WhiteRook48: very nice. time for Morphy to realize that Maurian's obviously not NN.
Jan-09-09  WhiteRook48: this is such a weird game. Morphy won some games where he gave odds like this, but not if Maurian played really well.
Feb-04-09  WhiteRook48: should go into "king hunts"
Oct-21-11  Mozart72: Maurian has an interesting material advantage value: 19.9 against Morphy: 10.2, and the latter lost.
May-29-16  Christoforus Polacco: Harvest :)
