Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-29-05  TopaLove: It seems that Kasparov sacrificed his d-pawn to get a better development.

Nov-01-06  aazqua: Silly Unzicker. Is Unzicker the guy who made a career out of playing screwball openings against mediocre opponents? He looks amateurish compared to Kaspy.
Nov-01-06  reynolds: For someone who was near pushing 80, he is definitely not bad.
Jul-01-09  Blunderdome: 4...Bb4+ is no good
Jul-01-09  WhiteRook48: 4...Bb4+ only allows white to gain tempo
Jan-29-11  Peter Nemenyi: <Is Unzicker the guy who made a career out of playing screwball openings against mediocre opponents?>

No, Unzicker's openings were utterly conventional for his era--Ruy with White and Black, Sicilian with White, Nimzo with Black. You may be thinking of Diemer, or a few games of Ujtelky's.

Jan-29-11  Peter Nemenyi: There are twenty-two of Kasparov's Scotches with White in this database, this being the last, and not once did his opponent dare to try today's Opening of the Day, 4...Qh4. It's understandable that they all thought a wild, sharp line would be suicide against Gazza, but he must have had some deep preparation in that continuation and I wish we'd seen it.
Dec-02-16  clement41: Unzicker was in his 80s at the time of this game, hence his awkward play that made him look like an amateur compared to Kaspy. I don't know the 4)...Bb4+ line but on principle this looks bad due to 4)c3. And indeed it is, as in the game black does not justify 4)...Bb4+ well and instead goes for 5)...Bc5, which is a crystal clear loss of tempo as after 6) Be3, white has got a very good version of the 4)...Bc5 scotch: with an extra c3.
