plang: Game 1 of their 3rd round match in the World Championship tournament; after a draw in game 2 Anand clinched the match in the quick play games. He went on to defeat Dreev and Shirov before being eliminated by Ivanchuk in the semi-finals. 14 Ra3 was a move that Anand had prepared knowing that this is a variation that Tkachiev often played; 14 Be3, 14 Ra4 and 14 Bc2 had all been played on several occasions previously. Anand felt that 27 Qb3! was his only chance to play for an advantage as 27 Qf1..Qf3+ 28 Qxf3..exf 29 Bc2..Rd2 would have been equal. 43 Bg5? was an error but White's winning chances seemed slim in any event. 44 Kh4? was not playable due to 44..g3.
