Feb-26-07 | | themadhair: Found the Q-sac instantly but still spent a fair chunk of time looking for another sac for mate. Grrr. |
Feb-26-07 | | mig55: Petrosian vs Spassky, 1966 I like this one. |
Feb-26-07 | | vibes43: Got the fork and all because it had to be. Would concern myself with 41...g5 when I came to it. Not so sure 40. Kc2 would happen so how can you say 41...g5 for sure? Good puzzle anyway. Thanks to CG. |
Feb-26-07 | | prinsallan: Basic Fork-setup, still a perfect puzzle for a monday. |
Feb-26-07
 | | OhioChessFan: Probably a time trouble mistake by White. I've seen spite checks before, but White's spite capture of a pawn was pretty lame. <Confuse> comment about g5 was meant as a joke, <vibes> It struck me as pretty humorous. |
Feb-26-07 | | greensfield: 38...Qxd1+ !! Queen capture forced putting Black King/Queen in a Knight fork situation, losing the Queen leaving Black a piece up with a winning endgame. |
Feb-26-07 | | e4Newman: i'd say black was pretty lucky |
Feb-26-07 | | Themofro: Nice combination, typical queen sac Monday puzzle, still a nice move though. |
Feb-26-07 | | Ashram64: queen sac monday! took me 30seconds..though.. but then again.i'm getting old |
Feb-26-07
 | | gawain: Saw the Q-sac and N-fork right away, but I regret not noticing White's threatened mate! |
Feb-26-07 | | zb2cr: Saw this relatively easily. I had wasted some time looking for a mate. After convincing myself there wasn't one, I saw the requisite Queen sacrifice followed by the fork in very short order. |
Feb-26-07
 | | kevin86: Funny,it's a scary position for black:He is threatened with mate and escape is problematic. BUT,this is a Monday puzzle at CG.com
So,an easy solution is called for. Voila! A queen sac followed by a fork gains a knight! |
Feb-26-07 | | YouRang: Found it quickly after I stopped trying to force mate. It's just a basic fork tactic, and it's practically forced since white is threatening Qh8#. |
Feb-26-07 | | nimzo knight: Got it. Only tough part it wasnt a mating combination on Monday.
But with number of extra pawns black has. Being piece up with queens off the board is a piece of cake. |
Feb-26-07 | | rochade18: When I saw this, I only remembered Skywalker lying on the floor, saying: "Use the fork...!" |
Feb-26-07 | | uuft: Couldn't somebody have put a 'No mate required'-sign up for a change!? Sjeeeezz... Although this too might be meant as a joke, I'm still too p*ssed off to laugh. |
Feb-26-07 | | uuft: Thanks for making me laugh at such short notice, rochade18. Makes it all worthwhile, LOL! |
Feb-26-07 | | YouRang: Hello <An Englishman>. <I saw the solution, but also looked at 38...Rxf2+ for fun; 39.Kc1 looks like the refutation.> I also looked at 38...Rxf2+ for fun, but it looks like 39. Kc1 doesn't quite work, since black then has 39...Rh2!, which stops white's Qh8 threat, and carries threats of it's own (like ...Rh1, threatening Qxd1#). I suspect that white is best by accepting the exchange sac, but white should ultimately lose to black's rolling kingside passed pawns, supported strongly by the Q+N. So, 38...Rxf2+ is probably winning, but still leaves room for a struggle. |
Feb-26-07 | | mckmck: Queen sac. knight check done. |
Feb-26-07 | | wals: However simple the solution may be, it is still satisfying to crack it. |
Feb-26-07
 | | playground player: CG could really throw us off by offering a Monday puzzle in which the Queen sac doesn't work! |
Feb-26-07 | | Happypuppet: They do sometimes; most people usually mention that they had to take a lot longer for it too. Not exactly good in the big scheme of things. |
Feb-26-07 | | bakuazer: i tried to look for a mate for about 2 minutes then I noticed the winning move. The 41...g5 move is also I belive the best move to stop white pawns' advance(except maybe black may also advance the pawn which may complicate). Then 42...Ne4 and 43...Nc5 does the job. Nice Monday puzzle. |
Feb-26-07 | | MindlessOne: Found it pretty quick, simple tactic. its going to be a good week |
Feb-26-07 | | LPeristy: This would have been an excellent spoiler puzzle. The king just moves to a different square instead of taking queen, and then black mates. I spent a lot of time making sure it wasn't a spoiler. But taking the queen is forced, and there you are then. |
