May-05-03  bishop: The Black Queen made 10 out of the 29 moves in the game. If White had stubbornly continued with 30.Nc2 then her majesty would have moved once again, 30...Qe2.

plang: Played in the first round; in the 5th round Pavasoviuc tried the gambit 5 d4..cxd 6 cxd..d6 7 Bc4..Nb6 8 Bb3..dxe 9 d5!? against Gelfand and the fame ended in a short draw. White went wrong early in the game; 10 axb was suggested as an improvement and certainly 11 Re1 followed by Re3 would have been better than Sermek's 11 Qb5? and 12 Ng5?. Equality could still have been maintained with 12 Qxd3..Rxd3 13 Ng5..Nd8 14 f4..h6 15 Nf3 followed by Kf2 and Ke2. White must have missed the powerful 12..c4!.
