Nov-16-10  SvetlanaBabe: FM Max Fuller. The great "shoulda been" of Australian Chess. He 'shoulda' been an IM. he 'shoulda' won the Australian Championship in '78, he 'shoulda' had better results etc. Repeatedly performed well above his rating. Top Australian player A good draw this. Exciting.

And indeed he WOULD have been in 1967, had he not lost the equivalent of a coin toss to Ortvin Sarapu after Max and he won the Oceania Zonal jointly. Sarapu got the IM title and the ticket to the Interzonal in Sousse, Max got nothing. One of the sad little stories of Australian chess.
