Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-03-05  DennisKucinich: Leon LaBatt was a Louisana judge who won an exhibition game against Capablanca according to a Dover anthology of his non-serious match (mostly) games. The volume, however, only publishes Capablanca's win against the judge's somewhat weak Black interpretation of the Dutch Defense.
Aug-31-10  paladin at large: LaBatt played Morphy and Capablanca.

sachistu: The game score is not correct. I thought Black's 27th looked dubious and is an apparent typo or transcription error. The actual move was 27...Rd3! Also, the venue was the Louisiana chp, which I found in 'The Life and Games of Carlos Torre' by G.Velasco (p 17-21). I'll submit a correction slip.

BLACK TO MOVE
Torre played here 13...Rd8?!, a move that had never been played before (according to databases which I consulted). So that, as Agadmator says in his interesting Youtube channel: "After this move we have a completely new game". Deserving attention was 13...a5!?, so as to prevent White's planned manoeuver 13....Ba6. Also possible albeit more passive was 13...Bb7, a move that has been played before at least four times (according to databases that I consulted). A likely continuation would be 13...Bb7 14.Ba6 Bxa6 15.Qxa6 c5 16.Rfc1 Rfd8 17.Qb5, and White has only a very slight edge (see diagram below):
