Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-02-05  Whitehat1963: Both sides seem to display flawless technique (to me at least). Where are the mistakes and what are the improvements?
Dec-02-05  Snow Man: what the !@#$% ?????
Dec-02-05  euripides: <whitehat> I don't know. But one interesting feature is that, after castling opposite sides, both players successfully defend their kings by advancing the pawns in front of them. Ivanchuk's 17 b4 is particualrly striking; this is an interesting plan to block the queen side in similar variations when the white K is on the K-side, but I can't think of another example where king is on the Q-side. The ending is interesting; both players are able to extract a rook for their passed pawns. Topalov's play in the ending is very pretty.

I guess that 22 f4 might be a mistake, but it's also possible white missed some chances at around move 29.

plang: 13 Na5 was new; 13 Qf2 had been played previously. Ivanchuk was critical oh his 17 b4?! recommending instead 17 Nc6..Nxd5 18 Nxe7..Nxe7 19 Qxd6 with equality. Seirawan thought that Topalov should have tried to punish Ivanchuk's play with 17..e4 18 Bg2..exf 19 Bxf3..0-0 when Black can use e5and the a1-h8 diagonal. 27 Bxg4..hxg 28 Nxe5..Qd6 29 Nc6..Bxh5 would have been good for Black. Topalov's 34..Rxd7! led to an easily winning rook ending.
