Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-10-07  Orion Sphere: Topalov gambits a pawn for great compensation. Way to own the french. Note that black can do nothing but retreat the bishop on move 9 as the a pawn is pinned to the black rook. A nice exchange of pieces allows the displacement of the black king, the retention of a usable b file and grants Topalov's knights strong support points in high ranks and much like in the smith morra and benko gambits the gambit of the pawn opens lines for the white rooks that ultimately allow them to penetrate to the 7th rank. The centre is closed and thus play must occur on the wings. Topalov keys off on this from the word go following the relatively unorthodox Ba4.
