plang: Game 2 of their second round match in the World Championship tournament (both had a bye in the first round). Game 1 had been drawn so this win clinched the match for Beliavsky. Beliavsky defeated Rublevsky in the third round before losing to Short in the fourth (both in tiebreaks). 9..Bd6 had been played previously including by Beliavsky in a win against Hubner at Polanica Zdroj 1996. With 27..a5 and 28..c4 Beliavsky was able to exchange his doubled pawn which is usually blacks biggest liability in the exchange variation. 32 c4? was a tactical mistake; Beliavsky suggested 32 Bh6 instead. After either accepting the exchange sacrifice with 34 Bxf8 or after 34 hxg white would have been clearly worse but Timman's 34 fxg led to 35..c3! when 36 Rc2..Rxf2+ 37 Rxf2..Rxf2+ 38 Kxf2..Ba3! wins.
