kingscrusher: Beautiful refutation move of the attack 17...Nd4

Very precise and lovely move to refute White's rook h4 business

Nov-09-21  Brenin: 24 ... e5 traps the R on d4, e.g. 25 Re4 Nc3 26 bxc3 Bxe4 27 Bxe4 Rxd1 mate. If 25 Rg4 then 25 ... Nf4 26 Bc2 h5 27 Rg3 Ne2+, and 25 Rh4 is similar, with g5 instead of h5.

  OhioChessFan: Outstanding pun.
Nov-09-21  lentil: People may forget that Tal could also defend!
Nov-09-21  nalinw: Yes - we are having some fantastic puns recently ....
Nov-09-21  Cheapo by the Dozen: Outstanding pun. :)
Nov-09-21  Brenin: The "pun" is, of course, a reference to Swift's novel Gulliver's Travels, comparing the L(illi)putian ability of White with Black's gigantic Talent.

MissScarlett: I'm not sure if <of course> is in order. <cg> has a diverse, international audience. To imagine that the large majority of our readership is au fait with the work of a 17/18th century English writer seems somewhat presumptuous. Has he been translated into Serbo-Croatian yet?
Nov-09-21  Z truth 000000001: FWIW- I think <Missy> is doing a crackerjack job on the GotD selections, even if puns aren't my cup of tea.

I wonder if the pun-meister should also be required to post a link to a spoiler, wherein s/he explains their interpretation of the pun for the general audience. They selected it after all, and some measure of punishment is clearly indicated!

FWIW2- I also think the GotD duties should rotate through a select group (even if only 2) of punsters, in the interest of diversity. That is, if someone else were masochistic to volunteer.

Being occasionally spelled might also help to impede the toll on volunteers' mental health, which is surely incurred from this duty.

Two's a crowd.....three's a bigger crowd.

Nov-09-21  Brenin: <MissScarlett>: My "of course" was (of course) ironic. Trying to find a hidden meaning in the pun, beyond the literal "Quick win by a great player", I hit on a barely plausible and probably three centuries out of date interpretation. I think I gave sufficient information to allow anyone unfamiliar with the gullible traveller to find out more via the usual search engine. Even so, I was pleased to discover that his fame has reached Illyria.

Honza Cervenka: <MissScarlett> I don't think that there is any cultural language in Europe into which Gulliver's Travels were not translated at least ten times since its first publication. There are more than twenty translations just in Czech made between 1852 and 2016...
Nov-12-21  nalinw: There are translations into many non-European languages as well - including Sinhala and Tamil - the languages of Sri Lanka
