Dec-29-04  Poisonpawns: These games by Tal are awsome, I dont even know what to say but I kibitz just to let somebody see this,I cant believe some of his games, there is truly know one like him.
May-06-21  RickAlexander: I can imagine Rytov's distress with taking the pawn on c4 on move 11. When Tal offers you a pawn, the last thing you want to do is take it...

perfidious: Botvinnik had a different view on the matter, once writing, according to Terence Reese and Albert Dormer:

<If Tal offers you a pawn, take it. If Petrosian offers you a pawn, decline it. If I offer you a pawn, think it over.>

Feb-08-25  Rubenchik: Botvinnik's comment is true But Bxc4 is not possible. All black pieces are active.
Feb-09-25  Murky: So, just what's wrong with 12. Bxc4? After 12...Nc5 white can try to keep the pawn by:

1) 13. Qf3, after which Bg4 14. Qg3 Ncxe4 15. Nxe4 Ndxe4 16. Nxe4 (16. Qxg4? Qb6+ -+) Rxe4 17. Bd3 Be2 and black is better.

2) 13. Qc2 Ng4 14. Nf3 Qb6 15. Kh1 Bxc3 16. Qxc3 Nxe4 17. Qd4 Nef2+ 18. Kh1 Qxd4 19. Nd4 Re4 and black is winning

3) 13 Re1 is the worst option with Ng4 14. Nf1 Qb6 lights out.

After Tal's 11... c4, Stockfish suggests that 12. e5! de 13. Nxc4 is equal.

beatgiant: The Opening Explorer and Similar Games features are handy in a case like this.

This game follows U Nehmert vs P Boersma, 1974 until move 14, where Tal improves with 14...Rxe5 (instead of 14...Nfd7 <15. e6> in the above game, with a White advantage).

Several games have tested 12. Bxc4 and White equalized in some of them by quickly returning the pawn: 12. Bxc4 Nc5 13. e5.

  perfidious: D Sahovic vs R Henley, 1978 saw the interpolation of 11....a6 12.a4 before there followed 12....c4 13.e5 dxe5 14.Nxc4.
Feb-10-25  Murky: Transcription error in my analysis in line #1. Left out 17... Qb6+ 18. Kh1 and only then 18... Be2.

Copying and pasting from the analysis window avoids transcription errors like mine, but results in vertical text that runs down the page (with multiple line breaks) and requires a lot of reformatting.

Maybe ChessGames.com can revise the copy & paste feature in the analysis window? Give us simple easy-to-read horizontal lines of chess text? That don't require reformatting? Yeah, right! That's gonna happen real soon!
