Jun-08-05  bomb the bishop: the opening encyclopedia recommends: 11..♘c7, followed by 12.a4 (12.f3 is another possibility)..b6, 13. f4

The ECO has its own vision of this opening, but Tal was who and what he was, that is a pioneer who took what he liked from the theoretical articles and ignored the rest.

The same is true about any of the great grandmasters, including all historic champions: Steinitz to Kasparov, those who analyzed with no trust to computers!

Jun-08-05  bomb the bishop: yes its always good to come up with innovative ideas, however you must have an excelent game play before employing them, the good thing about the opening encyclopedia though, is that it is based on the latest opening lines that have lead to succesful positions and obviously as you stated a computer analyzed position study
Jun-08-05  zhentil: <Kangaroo>You don't think Kasparov uses computers to study the opening?
Jun-08-05  Kangaroo: <zhentil: <Kangaroo>You don't think Kasparov uses computers to study the opening?>

YES, he does! But unlike those who use computers only and nothing but computers, Kasparov has developed analytical skills on his own!

In addition, I suspect, he does not need a computer as much as the frequent participants of numerous tournaments do! He can survive without his "hardware"!

Jun-11-09  ROO.BOOKAROO: Ray Keene gives a good analysis in his London Times column of June 11, 2009 http://entertainment.timesonline.co...
Nov-26-13  zydeco: Gligoric plays planlessly from move 8 to 17. The bishop needs to be on d3 or f3 (after f4). 13.b3 and 14.Bb2 don't do much against the Benoni. 16.Bd3 b4 17.Ne2 looks like it holds the balance.

45....g3 is a pretty finish.

May-20-15  ToTheDeath: No one was better than Tal in 1959. No one.

Honza Cervenka: Why not 30.f4 with idea 30...Re4 31.Nd2?
May-20-15  ToTheDeath: Well spotted, Honza. 29...Kg7 seems like a major inaccuracy. 29...f4 retains the advantage. Gligoric was probably in severe time trouble already here, the cost of defending a Tal attack.
Dec-01-15  Mehem: Maybe Tal was a real hypnotizer? Something very strange must have haunted Gligoric's mind to make him play 32.g4??
