An Englishman: Good Evening: The big question I have involves 12...Kf7!?, the crossroads. Obviously, Aronin felt that if he had to suffer, he might as well suffer with the extra Rook. Aronin probably knew of games where Tal's opponents would take a minor piece, survive the short-term threats and then realize they could not stop his passed pawns.

But what about the other two legal moves? 12...Be7; 13.Qe1!,Qd8; 14.Nh4 looks pretty uncomfortable, and 12...Kd8 raises the question of when will the Ra8 ever come to life.

But are they necessarily worse?

And what of Tal's decision to swap Queens? Was that really best, and if it was, did both sides play the complex ending perfectly?

This game seems to deserve a lot more attention than it has received. Just because Tal lost, that's no reason to ignore it.

Feb-18-10  Bobwhoosta: <An Englishman>

The fact that Tal lost might be a great reason to study it!

Feb-18-10  Bobwhoosta: I think it's amazing that such sacrifice in the very beginning of the game led, with great defence, to a rook up ending that nevertheless took forever to cash in. Tal certainly knew piece activity more than just about any player in history. Some of the sacrifices he makes astound and confuse, especially in positions where there are so many natural moves available!!
