Jun-24-21  Brenin: Like <Cheapo>, I chose the direct 19 Nxg7 Kxg7 20 Bh6+, underestimating the strength of the quieter 20 Bd4 in the game line; in the game, can Black defuse the attack by giving the piece back with Nxe4?

Dionysius1: 25. ♗xa6 is nice too. I know to win with ♕ v ♖♖ I need to look out for tactics. Good to see one. Except that 22. ♖c5 wasn't forced (what WAS that for?), I'd think it was the point of the combination starting 19. ♘xg7
Jun-24-21  goodevans: <Brenin: Like <Cheapo>, I chose the direct 19 Nxg7 Kxg7 20 Bh6+...>

Me too, but unlike <Cheapo> I followed up <20...Kh8> with <21.Bxf8 Rxf8 22.Qh6>.

Black can't avoid losing another piece here (22...Ncd7? 23.Rxf6!) leaving White the exchange and a pawn up and still on the offensive.

Probably not quite as good as Svidler's line (after I'd seen this I didn't even consider that) but still good enough for a win, I'd hope.

Jun-24-21  mel gibson: I didn't see any knockout blow.

Stockfish 13 says:

19. Nxg7

(19. Nxg7

Jun-24-21  goodevans: Oops. In my line above I meant to say <22...Ncd7? 23.e5! dxe5 24.Rxf6!>.

alussinan: <Hercdon><NBZ>: Hi all. The engine still doesn't work, even for paying membership. This is probably due to the recent maintenance operations. But you can download Stockfish for your computer from https://stockfishchess.org/. This will make the fan of your computer work more than usual.
Jun-24-21  saturn2: Where do all those questionmarks come from?

MissScarlett: It's a problem linked to the recent site upgrade (meant to improve things):

You need to be very careful when you set up Stockfish. I put it into Arena.
I have core temp running so I can see the CPU temperatures on all 4 cores. Set up the engine to run on 4 cores if you have a quad core. Don't let it try to run 8 cores on a 4 core hyper threaded CPU. Limit the memory to say half of what you have.
I have 16 Gig so I give it 8 Gig.

If you don't follow my instructions you could boil the CPU and the computer will be unresponsive as all clock cycles will
be used up running Stockfish.

pittpanther: Does anyone know when issues with the "upgrade" will be addressed? Now that the analysis engine no longer works, the daily puzzle shows up in black and white for me rather than color. I hope that the upgrade patch does not take us farther in the wrong direction.

NMABQjmgChess: Does anyone have any idea WHEN the engine will be back up? I had just paid for a premium membership and then there immediately starts a period of down time due to upgrades.

Upgrades I understand but why is it taking so long to get the engine back up??

Nice catch. I did 19.Nxg7 Kxg7 20.Bh6+ Kh8 21.Qg5

Thanks to the missing engine function, I have no idea if it's sound.

I would have played 17.Nf5.

agb2002: White has the bishop pair for a bishop and a knight.

Black threatens Ncxe4.

Black looks weak on the dark squares. This suggests 19.Nxg7:

A) 19... Kxg7 20.Bh6+ (20.Bd4 Ncd7 21.Rxf6 Nxf6 22.Rf1 is probably winning but looks more complex to me) 20... Kg8 (20... Kg6 21.Qg5#) 21.Qg5+ Bg6 22.Rxf6 Qe5 (due to Rxe6 and Bxf8) 23.Rf5 looks winning. For example, 23... Qxb2 24.Raf1 Rfe8 25.Rxf7.

B) 19... Ncxe4 20.Nxe6 Nxd2 21.Rxf6 fxe6 22.Rxf8+ Rxf8 23.Bxd2 wins a piece and a pawn.

C) 19... Nfxe4 20.Bxe4 Nxe4 (20... Qxe4 21.Nxh5 wins a piece and a pawn) 21.Qd4 Qg4 (21... Qe5 22.Qxe5 dxe5 23.Nxh5) 22.Nxh5 Qxh5 23.Qxe4 wins a piece and a pawn.

Jimfromprovidence: <Wilber G> 17 Nf5 is one move too early. You run into 17...Nxd5.

Willber G: Yeah, but I'm not as good as Svidler! (Or many others, without a doubt.)

I did solve the original puzzle, though.

Dionysius1: For me it's a refreshing discipline not to have the engine, as long as it comes back before too long. I'll miss it, critically, after another week perhaps.
