Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-10-11  BobCrisp: Nigel Rodney Davies uses this game to show the drawbacks for Black in the <KIA> of releasing the tension with ...dxe4. White gets to use either the e4 square for his knight after e4-e5, or, where black has played e5, the d5 square instead.

Nice game by <Stein> with lots of masterly touches.

Jul-15-12  Rick360: I'd have likely played 20. Qxf8ch. GM Stein's continuation was better, since black can no longer build a fortress after 21..d3. Instructive middlegame and ending.

perfidious: This is a classic early game which illustrates the strength of the King's Indian Reversed against weak play.

Stein didn't need to allow 4....e5; he was better off playing 4.d4 with a reverse Gruenfeld. After 9....dxe4, White was already better and he eventually got to play the thematic Nd5 (as in analogous variations of the old 9....Na5 in the main line Spanish) without even having to sacrifice a pawn.

Black got an unpleasant surprise with 17.Nd4, which began a forcing sequence leaving Stein a pawn up after 20.Qxd7, showing excellent judgment and much stronger than the win of exchange with 20.Qxf8+.

Dec-28-15  jerseybob: Gufeld judges black's loss of a tempo with Bg4/e6 to be not decisive, but heavily criticizes 12..b5?, recommending 12..Qc7 instead.
