Aug-06-19 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: I'd add that Black has surprisingly poor ability to shift forces from one side of the board to the other. |
Aug-06-19 | | bcokugras: Monday deal. |
Aug-06-19 | | ASchultz: @Jimfromprovidence Bc4 was my first thought, but I think ...Bf7 holds at least for the moment. Glad to see I wasn't the only person who jumped on Ba6. It certainly works, but I suppose I should have sat on my hands and taken a few seconds to look for something a bit better--but after Rc3 e2 Rc7 a6 Rc6 White will get a passer anyway. |

 | | Jimfromprovidence: <ASchultz>< @Jimfromprovidence Bc4 was my first thought, but I think ...Bf7 holds at least for the moment.> Yeah, I would have needed to see 38 Ba6 then. |

 | | agb2002: White has a rook and a bishop for the queen and a pawn. Black threatens Bg4 to reinforce the control on c8. After 37.Bxh3 (or 37.Ba6) White wins decisive material: 37... Qxh3 (37... f5 38.Bxf5; 37... Bg4 38.Bxg4) 38.c8=Q+ Qxc8 39.Rxc8+ Kf(g,h)7 40.Rc7+ and 41.Rxa7, etc. |
Aug-06-19 | | saturn2: 37. Ba6 was good enough.
37. Bxh3 has the only advantage that it wins also a pawm. |
Aug-06-19 | | zb2cr: 37. Bxh3 deflects the Queen from defending c8. If Black tries interposing a piece or a Pawn along the h3-c8 diagonal, White just takes with the Bishop. |
Aug-06-19 | | stacase: Easier than yesterday. |
Aug-06-19 | | The Kings Domain: Sweet puzzle and good game. Spielmann's probably the greatest and most inspiring player among the underrated greats. |
Aug-06-19 | | charlesdecharemboul: The second time I've got it in chessgames! |
Aug-06-19 | | patzer2: Instead of 25...Qg5? 26. Nb7 ± to +- (+1.56 @ 27 ply, Stockfish 10), Black can improve with 25...Kh7 ∓ (-1.52 @ 28 ply, Stockfish 10) or 25...Bh5 26. Rd4 Kh7 ∓ (-1.19 @ 28 ply, Stockfish 10). |
Aug-06-19 | | AlicesKnight: Found Bxh3. I wonder when Spielmann saw the earlier Qxf6..... |
Aug-06-19 | | whiteshark: The ♕ is a poor (back rank) defender against a ♖-supported passer on the 7th rank. |
Aug-06-19 | | malt: Seen 37.Ba6, then spied I could win a prawn with 37.B:h3. |
Aug-06-19 | | MrCarciofo: Ba6 allows black to keep on fighting: ...Bg4, then BxQ and BxB - white 's winning but needs more time than with Bxh3 that prevents ...Bg4. |
Aug-06-19 | | lost in space: Saw 37. Ba6 which is winning and didn't took the time to look for a better move. |
Aug-06-19 | | TheaN: 37.Bxh3 is objectively best, 37.Ba6 second best as it wins similarly without a pawn to boot; 37.Bc4+ is clearly worse as after 37....Kg7 38.Be6 Black's king is off the back rank (and, after 37....Bf7 White would still have to find 38.Ba6). |
Aug-06-19 | | Steve.Patzer: I saw Ba6 first but it is inferior to Bxh3 not only because it wins a Pawn, but if Ba6, Bg4 extends the game. |
Aug-06-19
 | | Jimfromprovidence: Another way to get a win is by 37 Rc6, below, setting up the nice threat 38 Ba6, where black would lose a queen for a bishop. click for larger viewNow, if 37...e2, then 38 Bxh3. |
Aug-06-19 | | TheBish: I saw 37. Ba6 first, then realized I can grab an additional pawn with 37. Bxh3. Not a huge difference, easy win either way. This is another game where the puzzle would be even better (and of course more difficult) going back a couple of moves: 35. Qxf6! was a nice shot. |

 | | gawain: Gee, I see no important difference between 37 Bxh3 and 37 Ba6. A neat finish either way. |
