Sep-15-16 | | Rubenchik: Spassky, impressive. |

 | | Honza Cervenka: Opening disaster of this kind can happen anytime in any opening. In fact, Larsen was highly successful with 1.b3 during all his career (see Repertoire Explorer: Bent Larsen (white)). |
Sep-15-16 | | pedro99: It's because of the strength of the 1...e5 reply, and the easy development that Black subsequently gets, that most would be b3 players precede it with 1.Nf3 4.Nf3 as played here is by contrast already a serious error. |

Sep-15-16 | | Rookiepawn: I like the difference of styles. Larsen went that Dutch formation with elegant diagonal pawn structure, all pieces behind the pawns, control of the dark squares... Spassky just ignored the beautiful schemes, got doubled pawns, pushed two pawns more and destroyed White's King side. I think the risk with 1. b3 is getting engaged in fine maneouvres while the enemy just throw punches that destroy them. |
Sep-15-16 | | King Harvest: <<Najdorf commented on Spassky's play..."When Spassky offers you a piece, you could just as well resign right there">> I thought that remark was made about Tigran Petrossian (the antithesis of an attacking player, but when he did sac you could be sure it was sound.) Spassky was, as shown here, a brilliant fearless attacker. Help me out here someone, what's the name of the absolutely mindboggling Soviet sac-attack player (60s/70s I think?) who rarely played internationally (possibly never got his GM because of this, but was nevertheless acknowledged as an elite soviet player)? His name is long and rather bizarrely (to American eyes at least) spelled. |

Sep-15-16 | | john barleycorn: <King Harvest> Nezhmetdinov is your man I guess |
Sep-15-16 | | dashjon: Spassky is a beast here. |
Sep-15-16 | | atragon: Really terrible game from Larsen. His position was quite unconfortable after Bf5 but still playable... f4 is very very bad but h3 was even worst opening his king side. It's very strange that he was able to win Game 3 forcing the Russians to withdraw Spassky to avoid that he could lose the 4 games match against Bent.... |
Sep-15-16 | | RookFile: Oddly enough, white might be able to survive with the move 10. a3. It comes with the idea of harassing the c5 bishop. Something like 10. a3 Kb8 11. b4 Bd6 12. c5 Be5 13. Bxe5 Qxe5 14. Nc3 paves the way for white to castle queenside. Black has the better position. |

Sep-15-16 | | morfishine: Drop another game-title turd on another great game, by Spassky that is...lol ***** |

 | | OhioChessFan: <morf> some of us think you are doing the same by commenting on every game page about the pun. Anyway, the site isn't going to stop with the daily puns. What exactly is your point? For the next 30 years, a daily post complaining about the pun? Yeah, that's a real benefit to the site. |
Sep-17-16 | | morfishine: <OhioChessfan> Look dude, do "us" and me a favor and stop trolling me. There's plenty of other people besides myself who complain about these stupid play-on-words, but you only reply to my posts. Whats your problem anyways? I've told plenty of people if you don't like my posts, put me on ignore Otherwise, just STFU

 | | perfidious: <morf....Otherwise, just STFU> A fine thought, but ain't gonna happen; <ohiyuk> joneses for the spotlight so as to satiate that immense ego, which brooks no opposition and which knows no bounds, given that he has never lost an argument and always, always, always gets the last word. |

Mar-25-18 | | Sourav: Isn't 6...bc6 a better move because it enables a subsequent push of the Black d pawn to d5 thereby dominating the center? |
Mar-25-18
 | | keypusher: <Sourav: Isn't 6...bc6 a better move because it enables a subsequent push of the Black d pawn to d5 thereby dominating the center?> Spassky's move opens the d-file and the c8-h3 diagonal; put another way, he prefers rapid development and piece play to a strong pawn center. Obviously it worked out pretty well! For what it's worth, Stockfish strongly prefers 6....dxc6 to 6....bxc6. |
Mar-25-18
 | | keypusher: <sourav> Another example is the Boden-Kieseritzsky Gambit: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Bc4 Nxe4 4.Nc3 Nxc3 5.dxc3, as in this amazing game: Morphy vs T W Barnes, 1859 |
Dec-17-18 | | MrJafari: I wonder how a GM can play such week moves!? |
Aug-22-19
 | | kbob: Just for comic relief, Stockfish proclaims 14. ...Rh1 third (!) best after 14. ...Qh4 and 14. ...Bxe3. |
Aug-22-19 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: Larsen was basically sunk when he decided not to castle long, or at least not to do so in a timely fashion. Until then the game was pretty even, according to the engine. |
Aug-22-19
 | | moronovich: Definately one of Larsens most known games. |
