Dec-16-13  RookFile: Smyslov appeared to defend pretty well in a losing effort. An impressive win by Ribli.
Sep-13-14  aragorn69: Brilliant endgame!
Sep-13-14  Howard: Yes, it was certainly well-played by Ribli...

....but then in the Candidates semi-final round, when Smyslov and Ribli were paired off, things turned out differently.

Phony Benoni: Poor Zoltan Ribli. Destined to be monopuntal.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Did the players adjourn the game here, and then Smyslov resigned before the resumption of play?

HeMateMe: Benoni, have you ever met any of these famous players, at the USA Opens?
Dec-12-14  shivasuri4: Wouldn't 38...Be5 have been better? I can't see White getting anything more than a perpetual after 39.Rxe5 Qxe5 40.Qf7+ Kh8.
Dec-12-14  posoo: now dis - DIS - is a CLASSIC example of a game NOT played in da posooian style.

Penguincw: With the Caissar Awards coming up (presumably), I think I know what I'm voting for Best/Worst Pun of the Year. :)
Dec-12-14  TheTamale: Perfect pun. Simple, relevant, funny.
Dec-12-14  kevin86: Black cannot hold the game, despite being a bishop for three pawns.
Dec-12-14  Alphastar: What is the pun about?
Dec-12-14
Premium Chessgames Member
HeMateMe: It's about Cal Ripken, a baseball player who went 20 years without missing a game.
Dec-12-14  Lighthorse: <Alphastar: What is the pun about?> Ripley's Believe It or Not museums. See http://www.ripleys.com/ They are in a number of USA locations, some in Canada, and a few others in other countries.

Domdaniel: If Ribli/Ripley provides a pun, how about Patricia Highsmith's Ripley novels?

Ribli's Game
The Boy who Followed Ribli
Ribli Under Ground

etc...

HeMateMe: I think the pun was meant to reference Lt. Ripley:

Dec-13-14  Cheapo by the Dozen: Ripley's Believe It Or Not also has a daily cartoon with about 3 factoids each:

<<Ringo van Flintoff had a chess career spanning three centuries!

In 1798 he played the automaton Mephisto in Paris when he was aged only four!

He continued playing throughout his life and finally died at the chess board 103 years later in 1901!

A career which covered the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries!>
