Jun-23-20  Retireborn: 1975 was the year that Smyslov (then in his 50s and presumably with reduced enthusiasm for remembering theory) started playing 3...g6 against the Spanish. That year he scored 4.5/5 with it; this game was the .5.

50.c5 creates a strange impression, as it loses a pawn and there seems no reason not to play 50.Nxg3. Nevertheless it holds the draw if White can find the precise 55.Ne3 and 59.Kd2.

One wonders how much of this Westerinen saw in advance, but he deserves great credit for defending this endgame very coolly.
