Nov-28-11  Antiochus: 31.Rf1 with 32.g5 (with f5 idea) looks intersting.
May-17-13  dmvdc: I was bewildered by 19...Re7 when I was playing over this game from Smyslov's point of view. Happily, then, Smyslov's own annotation to the move reads:

<Perhaps an unnecessary move.>

  plang: The plan of 3..Bb4 and 6..e4 was an original idea of Smyslov that was first tried in this game and which has now become one of the main lines. Bagirov thought that White would have had a small edge after 18 Bh3. On the other hand, 18 Nd5..Qxe1 19 Nxf6+..gxf 20 Rxe1..Rxe1+ 21 Kf2..Rae8 would not have been dangerous for Black. 23 c5?! looked promising but Smyslov showed that the opening of the position with 23..dxc worked in Black's favor; 23 f4 would have been better. 39 h4 was an inaccuracy; 39 Qe5+ at once would have been a tougher defense.
