Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-08-08  CharlesSullivan: At move 36, Smyslov should have played ♖xc6! to achieve a drawn position after 36...♖xc6 37.♗xe4 etc. In his turn, Black missed the chance to dominate the play after 36...♗d5!! 37.♖xb4 ♖g8. The strongest resistance I can find for White is 38.♖f1+ ♔e7 39.♖f4 ♖a1+ 40.♔h2 e3! 41.♗xd5 e2 42.♖fe4 e1=♕ 43.♖xe1 ♖xe1

Now it seems inevitable that Black will win the b-pawn; for example: 44.♗f3 ♖e3 45.♔g2 ♖f8 46.♗d1 ♖d3 47.♗e2 ♖d2 48.♖e4 ♖xb2 and Black is ahead by the Exchange and has excellent winning chances.
