Honza Cervenka: 30.Rd2 with intention to play c3-c4 was worth of consideration.

sachistu: In the tournament book, Botvinnik claims that if a successful answer to 10.Nc3 is not found, this entire variation will disappear from tournament practice. Apparently it took about 12 years for an improvement.

In Christoffel-Trifunovic,Mitropa Cup,1953, Black played 10...Bb4!, and even though Trifunovic did not follow up in the strongest way (according to Pachman), my understanding is (10...Bb4) is still considered the best line for Black.

According to Botvinnik, White could have decided the game with 17.e6! when Botvinnik gives 17...Rf6 18.e7 Bd7 (not ...Bd7 19.Nc6!) 19.Re5. Botvinnik makes no further comment, but I assume he means White would double (with Qe2) on the e-file when the passed pawn will eventually cost Black something. One possibility is 19...Rf7 20.Qe2 c5 21.Nb3 c4 22.Nc5 Bc8 23.Rd1! (not 23.Re1 c6) c6 24.Ne4! Also it appears Black cannot go pawn-hunting with ...Rb2 and after Re1 Rxa2 White plays Rb1 with threats on the back rank. Perhaps someone can find an improvement for Black.

<Honza Cervenka> Botvinnik agrees with your suggestion of 30.Rd2 and gives 30...fxg3+ 31.Kxg3 h4+ 32.Kg2 Kc8 (otherwise 33.c4) 33.Nb4 with good winning chances -Botvinnik.
