May-24-06  zev22407: Short demonstrate the power of the 2 B in middlegame and endgame.

OhioChessFan: This pun is so bad even <Brenin> won't claim to like it.

al wazir: White enters the endgame with an extra piece. White wins.

What's so special about this game?

Honza Cervenka: 25...Nxd5 is forced by threat 26.Qd4. Of course, instead of that black could resign.
Jul-19-22  areknames: According to Zilber's page, he was known as "The Sheriff" when he sat in Washington Square Park in NY in the 80's. This helps explain the pun but still doesn't make it a good pun. Surprisingly weak effort from our <Selector>.

NM JRousselle: Did Black forget that resigning was an option?
Jul-19-22  AIC: 25...Nxd5 26.cxd5 Qxd5
What was Black's idea?? Looks like the sheriff shot himself :))
Jul-19-22  nalinw: Nemo judex in causa sua (or nemo judex in sua causa) (which, in Latin, literally means "no-one is judge in his own cause") is a principle of natural justice that no person can judge a case in which they have an interest
Jul-19-22  Brenin: I like the pun.

  Dionysius1: <AIC>

Black had to stop 26.Qd4 and mate. 26...Nxd5 27.Qd4 Nxc3.

If 26.cxd5 then take with anything or 26...Bf2, 27.Qd4 et seq calamitosus est.

So if you're playing on, 26...Qxd5 seems sensible.

Jul-19-22  goodevans: Zilber was getting towards the end of his career but still had 150 rating points over his young opponent who had yet to achieve IM status.

<al wazir: White enters the endgame with an extra piece. White wins. What's so special about this game?>

Well, of course we had to get to the point where White got an extra piece.

Dionysius1: <al wazir>. What makes the game special for me iss how weak Black's king-side squares become, just with 25.d5 And if White hangs back for just one move Black plays 25...Kf8 and the moment has gone.

eg

25.Ra7 Kf8 26.d5

Now black ends up with counterplay. eg

25. Ra7 Kf8 26. d5 cxd5 27. Qd4 Nc6 28. Qf6+ Qf7 29. Rxb7 Qxf6 30. Bxf6 dxc4 31. bxc4 Bxc4 32. Bxg5

Black to move

Teyss: Following <Honza Cervenka>'s and <Dionysius1>'s posts, the game is much more interesting than it first seems.
Following <areknames>'s, the pun also.
Jul-19-22  AIC: Thanks <Dionysius1>
