Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-04-25  TheaN: Somehow familiar, but the game's new to me as this is the first kibitz... anyways, pretty straightforward promotion combination <49.Nf5+ gxf5 50.Rxd8> similar as yesterday there is an alternative, but now they're actually about the same. 50.Rb7+ Ke8 51.Rxd8+ +- is just a tad bit more forcing <50....Kxd8> with one sideline here being 50....Rc7 51.Rd1 Nc3 52.Rb7! +- but White already won the exchange and kept the a-pawn anyway <51.a7 Kc7 52.Rb8 Ra2 53.a8Q Rxa8 54.Rxa8 +-> and White wins the rook and the game.

  takebackok: Think a little Tuesday, had the simple 49. a7 Ra2 50. Nf5+ gxf5 51. Rxd8 Kxd8 52. Rb8+ etc. think it's gg.
Feb-04-25  TheaN: Actually, in my 'main' line both 52.Ra6 (bit weird I missed that...) and 52.a8Q are superior. So Black's kind of forced to play 51....Ra2 right away, after which 52.Rb8+ Ke7 53.a8Q +- accomplishes the same. End result, White's an exchange up with a passer and loose Black pawns.
Feb-04-25  Mayankk: White is already up a pawn with 2 passed pawns as well. Probably anything wins. Maybe this puzzle is about finding the fastest win but I usually suck at those.

I saw the very basic 49 a7 (passed pawns must be lushed) Ra2 50 Rb8 and seemed Black was paralysed. 50 ... Rxd6 51 Rxd6 Rxa7 leaves it an exchange down. 50 ... Rxa7 51 Rxd8 Kxd8 52 Nb5+ leaves it a Rook down. Anything else is likely worse.

  FSR: 49.Nf5+ gxf5 50.Rb7+ Ke8 51.Rxd8+ Kxd8 52.a7 Ra2 53.Rb8+ and a8=Q, leaving White up an exchange with a won game.
Feb-04-25  King.Arthur.Brazil: One line could be: 49. Rb7+ (Kf8 50. a7 Ra2 51. Rb8) Rd7 50. Nf5+ gxf5 51. Rbxd7+ Kf6 52. R3d6+ Kg7 53. a7 Ra2 54. b5 Nc3 55. Ra6. Also, 49. Rb7+ Ke6 50. a7 Ra2 51. Rb8 Ke7 52. Rxd8 Kxd8 53. Nc4+ Kc8 54. a8=Q+ Rxa8 55. Nb6+ Kb7 56. Nxa8 Kxa8 57. Rb3 win and 53. Nc4+ Kc7 54. b5 Kb7 55. b6... with strong passed ♙.

However, the best move seems to be the direct sacrifice: 49. Nf5+ gxf5 50. Rxd8 Kxd8 51. a7 Rc8 52. Rb8. Or 51. ... Ra2 52. Rb8+ Kc7 53. a8=Q Rxa8 54. Rxa8... with a ♖x♘ endgame.

FSR: <Mayankk: I saw the very basic 49 a7 (passed pawns must be lushed)>

What does that mean? Turned into alcoholics?

<Ra2 50 Rb8 and seemed Black was paralysed. 50 ... Rxd6 51 Rxd6 Rxa7 leaves it an exchange down. 50 ... Rxa7 51 Rxd8 Kxd8 52 Nb5+ leaves it a Rook down. Anything else is likely worse.>

In your second line, 52.Nb5 isn't a check. Black's king is on d8.

Feb-04-25  saturn2: No need for a flashy knight sscrifice. 49. a7 does the job. ......Ra2 50.Rb7
Rd7 51.Nf7
Kf8 51.Rb8
Ke6 51.Rb8
Feb-04-25  mel gibson: I wasn't sure -
Stockfish 17 pushes the a pawn:

49. a7

(49. a7 (1.a7 Ra2 2.Nf5+ gxf5 3.Rb7+ Ke8 4.Rxd8+ Kxd8 5.Rb8+ Ke7 6.a8Q Rxa8 7.Rxa8 Nc3 8.Rh8 Kf6 9.Rxh5 Kg7 10.Rg5+ Kh8 11.Rxf5 Nd5 12.b5 f6 13.Rh5+ Kg7 14.Rh4 Nb6 ) +6.57/32 121)

score for White +6.57 depth 32.

if I force SF to play the game ply:

49. Nf5+ gxf5

(49. .. gxf5 (1. ... gxf5 2.Rb7+ Ke8 3.Rxd8+ Kxd8 4.a7 Rc1+ 5.Kf2 Rc2+ 6.Kg3 Ra2 7.Rb8+ Kd7 8.a8Q Rxa8 9.Rxa8 e4 10.Kf2 exf3 11.Kxf3 Nd2+ 12.Kf4 Nc4 13.Ra7+ Ke8 14.h4 Nd6 ) -6.06/35 288)

score for Black -6.06 depth 35.

Feb-04-25  areknames: I went for 49. Nf5+ but 49.a7 is just as good. Some lines actually transpose.
Feb-04-25  areknames: After 35...Nd7?? 36.Bxa6! Portisch loses his most important pawn and the game. This wasn't a good tournament for him, he finished with +1 =10 -4.
