Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-19-13  parisattack: An epic struggle by two players pretty much in their prime. Stein played the KIA against the Caro-Kann frequently and well. The ...c6 move perhaps plays a bit committing and passive.
Apr-10-15  zydeco: Kind of an odd maneuver with 16.Qe4-c4-f1. My guess is that Stein was playing psychologically, trying to provoke some weakness.

30....Qxe5 seems like either panic or miscalculation. Maybe just 30....Rd7.

Dec-28-15  jerseybob: Stein inflicted 2 famous losses on Portisch, this one and the brilliancy at Stockholm '62. But despite that, Portisch actually had a winning record against Stein. He was a tough customer for most of the Soviet GMs.
Apr-08-24  VictorVonDoom: Why did Portisch resign here? He's only down one pawn.

perfidious: Bishop vs knight in an open position with play on both sides of the board left Portisch little hope facing a top GM.

saffuna: It was 43. So there had probably been an adjournment where Portisch couldn't find a way to save the game.

perfidious: Maybe, but very often in those days of adjournments, game scores turned up 'a move short': that is to say, a player would seal, then resign without resuming play.
