Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-08-03  uponthehill: Impressive is Pillsbury's King's mobility and using him as a blocker (to cut the bishop from protecting a8 square from white rook).
Jul-23-09  Knight13: 14. h4 traps the black knight. Wonder why Pillsbury didn't play it. Maybe 14...Nxf3+ 15. Qxf3 Bxh4 and black gets a strong attack, but I think White can hold.
Sep-20-18  mifralu: Pillsbury annotates his game vs Pollock, but gives < 28. ... g6 29. Kf4 h5 > and

< 34. Rd6 Bf3 35. Kf4 Be4 36. Rd7 Kg8 37. Re7 Kf8 38. Rxe8+ Rxe8 39. Nxb4 Rb8 40. Nxa6 Rb5 >

41. Ke3 Rxb3+ 42. Kd4 Rxg3 43. Nc5 h4 44. b4 h3 45. Ra2 Kg8 46. Ra8+ Kh7 47. e6 fxe6 < 48. f7 Rf3 49. Nxe4 dxe4 > 50. f8=Q Rxf8 51. Rxf8 < h2 52. Rf1 and wins >

Dec-10-18  HarryP: Pillsbury thought 14.h4 to win the Knight would be unsafe. He said 14... Nh3+ 15.gxh3 Bxh4 16.Re2 f6 would give Black "too strong an attack."

Some analysis in the September 1996 Chess Life calls 32.Nd3 a mistake and says 32.e6! fxe6 33.Rh2 Rg8 34.f7 Rh8 35.Kf6 e5 36.Rh4! Bxg4 37.Rxg4! will win for White.

Pillsbury's play from 42.Ke3 on is beautiful and is somewhat similar to Capa's famous endgame in Capablanca-Tartakover, New York 1924.

Dec-21-22  tbontb: A remarkable finish. As Pillsbury demonstrates, 45....h3 is clearly losing. Instead, analysis suggests Rg4 46.e6 Bf5+ 47.Kd5 fxe6+ 48.Ke5 Rxb4 saves the draw for Pollock.
