Jun-17-18  WorstPlayerEver: Curious game where Nehz sacks a Knight for a pawn. I didn't understand why White does not simply play 18. Qa3.

18. Qa3 f4 19. Ba7 f3 20. gxf3 exf3 21. Nxf3 b6 22. Na4 and White is winning. SF agrees :)

plang: The last game of a 14 game match; with the match tied both players needed a win to obtain the master title. 7..Nbd7 was new; 7..a5 had been played in two mid-19th century games. 11..a5?! seems dubious; 11..Ne8 followed by ..f5 was more logical. The dubious piece sacrifice 15..Nxe4 was influenced by the match situation. Boleslavsky recommended 17 0-0 returning the piece and obtaining a positional edge. Nezhmetdinov outplayed his opponent and after 27 Kc2? even obtained an advantage. In time pressure Black missed several wins.

I wonder how much more popular chess would be if there were more last round games like this.

Mikenas obtained master title in 1944 after winning the match against Ljublinsky 8:6.

Mikenas was chosen by Soviet chess federation as a master, examinator of Nezhmetdinov.
