This Marshall Variation with 4...Bg4

click for larger view

was played by him with 3 wins in three previous German tournaments.

Przepiorka vs Marshall, 1906 Nuremberg Round 1

Duras vs Marshall, 1906 Nuremberg Round 11

M Brody vs Marshall, 1908 Dusseldorf Round 2.

Speijer knew these games and had a tactical surprise waiting for Marshall to steer the game in a won Queenless ending. It worked.

Then Speijer relaxed, Marshall cooked up counter-play like only a Marshall can, Speijer reacted too timidly and we add another swindle to the Marshall collection. After this game Marshall gave up 4...Bg4.

I hit on this game by chance, it is not in Marshall's inspiring 'My 50 Years' or the excellent Solitis book which I am devouring page by page, game by game. mulling over each move, smelling the wood and feeling young again.

Chess like is the reason I fell in love with the game.

A wee correction there.

Chess like 'this' is the reason I fell in love with the game.

That's better.
